Bron: DORDRECHT zoals het was in wind en weer 2.
Zie o.a. 555_17153. . . Louter en alleen naar de lantaarnpalen gekeken kan het niet na 1930 zijn. Zie o.a. 552_230229 . . Periode beperkt van 1904 tot 1930 kom ik al gauw tot onderstaand rijtje met wat serieuze momenten: . . 12 maart 1906 327cm +NAP 11 november 1912 302cm +NAP 13 januari 1916 343cm +NAP 2 december 1917 303cm +NAP 26 november 1928 327cm +NAP . . Bedenkend dat het water bij 225cm +NAP al tot de *verhoogde* dorpels staat, zullen er heel wat meer momenten van wateroverlast zijn geweest dan het bovenstaande rijtje doet vermoeden.
Ik heb mijn jeugd doorgebracht in het Dordtse havengebied. Vanaf 1955 woonde ik met mijn broer en mijn ouders op de hoek van de Kuipershaven en Aardappelmarkt in het pand Sint Joost. Iedere winter overstroomde het hele Dordtse havengebied meerdere keren. We moesten - wanneer dit overdag plaats vond - eerder van school naar huis terugkeren omdat we anders niet meer thuis konden komen. Veel bewoners werden dan met een roeiboot naar hun woning gevaren. Vanuit ons huis konden we dan zien hoe hoog het water ging stijgen op (als eerste) de Knolhaven, Nieuwe Haven, het Vlak en de Wolwevershaven. Tijdens noordwesterstorm en springtij stond er ruim een meter water op sommige plekken. De volgende dag kwam de brandweer de kelders leegpompen. (Daarmee vergeleken is de wateroverlast van de afgelopen jaren nog te overzien..). Pas door het geleidelijk voltooien van de Deltawerken (o.a. de Grevelingendam in 1965 ) overstroomden de kades minder.
